Quick answer
From Kraków to Zakopane you can go by bus or train. Buses leave from the MDA bus station next to Kraków Główny about every half hour from early morning until late evening and take about 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on traffic. Trains are fewer but faster than they used to be: since the 2025/2026 timetable PKP Intercity runs 9 daily pairs of trains, and the fastest, a Pendolino (EIP), takes 1 hour 57 minutes. On busy weekends the road to Zakopane is often jammed, which makes the train the more predictable choice.
Zakopane, at the foot of the Tatra Mountains, is the most popular day trip and weekend escape from Kraków. The distance is not great, but the journey time depends heavily on how you travel and when. This guide compares bus, train and car, and gives tips for avoiding the worst queues.
